However, according to the Henley Passport Index, Hong Kong’s passport, or an HKSAR passport, is ranked 19th in terms of mobility, which means you can travel visa-free to many countries.

Visa-free access to visiting Hong Kong is available for stays up to six months. There are different entry requirements in Hong Kong during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as barring all non-Hong Kong residents from “high risk” areas of the country from entering.

Before embarking on a trip to Hong Kong, be sure to check the latest entry restrictions and quarantine requirements.

How to get a visa for a visit to Hong Kong?

If you’re planning a trip to visit Hong Kong soon, you may be wondering how to obtain a visa. If you need a visa, the first step is determining if it is required. Visas are not required to enter hong kong, the region for citizens of the approximately 170 visa-exempt countries.

However, if you’re curious about anything else, you can use Google or iVisa’s Visa Checker. Make sure you select Hong Kong as your final destination from the drop-down menu. There are only two options for obtaining a Hong Kong visa: applying for one at a Chinese embassy or submitting an application to the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

The visa requirements for Hong Kong tourists are clear and easy to follow. Most nationalities do not need a visa to enter the United States. The nearest Chinese mainland diplomatic mission or consulate can be used to apply for a visa. Before arriving in Hong Kong, citizens of India and Taiwan must complete Pre-arrival Registration forms.

Details of the Visa Application Process:

Any Chinese embassy or consulate can help travelers obtain a Hong Kong visa before their trip begins. Alternatively, you can send your visa application to the HKSAR Immigration Department directly by post or through a local sponsor.

Faxing application forms and supporting documents in the first place can speed up the process. In addition, the HKSAR Immigration Department must receive an airmail copy of the completed application form and the required photographs as soon as practicable.

A visa/entry permit will only be issued if an original, properly completed visa application form is submitted.

Gather the Documentation You Need:

Before your visa interview, gather and prepare these documents:

  • The validity of your passport for travel to the United States must extend at least six months beyond the time you plan to spend there unless exempt by country-specific agreements. Each member of your family and any other individuals listed in your passport must submit a separate visa application.
  • Form DS-160 confirmation page.
  • If you must pay an application fee before your interview, you will receive a copy of this receipt.
  • Fill out the online Form DS-160 and upload a photo of yourself. Photographs must be brought in the format specified in the Photograph Requirements if uploading fails.

Passengers who arrive in Hong Kong:

Visitors to Hong Kong from other countries who plan to finish their journey there must now meet new and more stringent entry requirements implemented by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government. COVID-19 test results and other supporting documentation are required for passengers attempting to travel by plane or bus. Use Fly Ready to upload and verify all of your required documentation in advance, and make sure you’re all set for your flight to Hong Kong.

Arrival testing:

All incoming passengers must have a health declaration form at the Hong Kong International Airport.

A PCR test for coronavirus will be required of all passengers who arrive at Hong Kong International Airport for an entry permit. Passengers must wait till the processing time for the results of the tests, which could take several hours. Inquiries can be directed to the Center for Health Protection.

The Hong Kong government will arrange for you to be admitted to a public hospital where you will be kept in isolation for at least ten days if you test positive. A quarantine period of 14 days will be put in place if the Hong Kong government deems you a contact of a positive case. All new arrivals require a 14-day mandatory quarantine in a designated hotel or the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Penny’s Bay Quarantine Centre, even if they test negative for coronavirus.

The Hong Kong-bound train:

Visitors to Hong Kong citizens of the People’s Republic of China do not require a visa to enter the territory. As long as they have a valid passport and tickets for connecting flights, they can stay for 7 days if they are transiting from another country (or region) abroad. Tickets aren’t required to go to the Chinese mainland or Macao.

No entry permits are required for Chinese passport holders for up to 7 days as long as they present their connecting flight tickets, destination visas, or legal residence permits upon arrival in Hong Kong.

You must apply for an entry permit in advance if you intend to stay in Hong Kong for more than seven days. The Chinese Embassy may issue a single-entry or double-entry permit valid for three months with a maximum stay of 30 days for each. It is possible to apply for a two-year multiple entry visa if you have a permanent residence card and have been away from home for more than one year.

Permanent Residents of Hong Kong:

As a Hong Kong permanent resident, you’ll be able to take advantage of some of the benefits and privileges normally reserved for citizens. These are some examples:

· Having the right to stay in Hong Kong indefinitely

· Workers’ rights in Hong Kong

· Education and healthcare should be available to all.

· In some local elections, the right to vote

· Some government programs are available to those who meet the eligibility requirements.

Hong Kong Permanent Residents vs. a Hong Kong Citizen:

It is not the same as becoming a Hong Kong citizen, but it opens up a slew of advantages, as we’ve seen above.

Even though naturalization as a Chinese citizen is difficult, many people desiring to live in Hong Kong opt to apply for permanent residency (PR). As a Hong Kong permanent resident, you can keep your original citizenship, whereas naturalization would require you to give up your citizenship.

Permanent resident status, unlike Hong Kong citizenship, is not indefinite. If you leave Hong Kong for more than three years, your status will be revoked. Being a permanent resident of Hong Kong alone won’t be enough to qualify you for a Hong Kong passport; you’ll also need to meet several other requirements. To obtain a Hong Kong passport, you must first be a citizen of China.

Approval of Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR visa applications

In order to get a Chinese visa, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

· An application for a visa to Hong Kong

· Citizens of India do not require a visa for up to 14-day stays in Hong Kong.

· A visa is necessary to stay in Hong Kong longer than the 14-day visa-free period allowed, such as for Indians or foreigners who are not exempt from the visa requirement. In addition, the application should be submitted directly to the Hong Kong Immigration Department or the Chinese Embassy in India, respectively. It could take 6 weeks for these applications to be processed.

· Please bring the following with you when applying for a visa to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate:

· Visa application form with 2 photographs and a photocopy of passport information.

· However, it is possible that other supporting documents, such as proof of financial or business status, may be required.

Travel from Hong Kong, Macao, and China’s mainland:

Macao Bridge and the Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint are the only border crossings with mainland China that remain open indefinitely. Within 72 hours of their departure, all passengers intending to take the bridge shuttle bus from Hong Kong to Macau need to provide documentation proving they have tested negative for COVID-19.

Service between Taipa Ferry Terminal in Macau and Hong Kong International Airport has ended. Ferry service from Shenzhen Shekou Port to International Airport is currently the only service operating between Hong Kong and mainland China. For the time being, the Kai Tak Cruise and Ocean Terminals are closed to passengers.

Who can apply for citizenship?

Most visitors who enter Hong Kong are permitted to stay for some time, ranging from seven days to 180 days, depending on their nationality. Citizens of Afghanistan, Vietnam, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo must obtain visitor visas to enter the British. The Immigration Department keeps track of all visitors who require visas and the length of time they will be unable to enter the country if they do not have one.

Those who wish to live in Hong Kong permanently or for a longer period than their visa permits must apply for Hong Kong citizenship. If a Hong Kong business employs non-citizens, they could face a fine of up to 350,000 Hong Kong dollars. Those who have visas or have lived in Hong Kong for more than seven years will be issued an ID card by the Hong Kong government.
